One day our friend told us to go to www.jath.com, and there we found our soul mate. All right, so he's just a nice guy, but he's so right up MASH's alley! Jeff @ the house - for so jath stands - has a two minute film everyday. Everyday! Well, actually, every week day, but still, that's pretty cool. The films feature Jeff Favre, an overly tall, warm and funny man with the prettiest blue eyes. You can't really see them on the web, though. He also writes a weekly column that appears in a bunch of SoCal (as they so horrifyingly refer to Southern California in this state. They also call it The Southland - ach, so queer!) newspapers. We
asked Jeff some questions and his answers are very interesting and
all, but really, what you should do (but don't forget to read all
of MASH) is go check out his site. There's even an introductory film
to give you a feel for things. And the films hardly take any time
at all to download. We picked a sample one for you below. Jeff's part
of our morning ritual now.
Oh yeah, here's the stuff we asked him: MM: Who's nutty idea was Jeff @ the house? What inspired it? JF: Dan Nelson came up with the idea for jath.com. One day he looked at me and said, "I want to do a daily show on the Web. You'll interview people, which you do already as a reporter, and you'll tell stories, just like you do in your one-man shows. What do you think?" I said, "Sure, but why the hell did you come up with this idea while we're in the car moving me to Los Angeles and 2,000 away from you in [Chicago]?!" MM: What's yer point (i.e. what are your hopes for the site?)? JF: Guessing how the web is becoming a new way to get entertainment, we hope a larger site might buy us as part of its programming. We aren't looking for big bucks, but I feel we have one of the best pieces of entertainment on the Web. It has a following and could be much bigger with the right exposure. MM: Since we're such losers and have only started watching recently, can you give us some examples of episodes you've done? JF: Two of the most popular episodes ever are, "Am I Gay?" and "Never Had Sex Here." Both titles seem to be self-explanatory. We break our shows into two types: There are interviews and solo stories. Some folks like one kind more than the other, but it's a good mix. Interviews include wacky people (a woman who had severe Y2K phobia) and celebs (Roger Ebert's new co-host), but we like to ask more offbeat questions. The stories I tell are true. We like to have laughs but refuse to play strictly for that because that's an easy out. MM: Has anybody ever recognized you? JF: Well ... I have gone to offices where I've interviewed someone there, and their co-workers recognized me. It's kind of fun if someone does recognize me. It's minor celebrity, which is about as much as anyone could ask for. MM: How does a show get made? JF: Dan shoots on a digital camera. We have lights for the "house" set, but otherwise, it's natural light. Shooting one two-minute episode can take anywhere from 15 minutes to a few hours depending on what it is. When we went to several Starbucks in Chicago to show how there's one at every "L" train stop, it took all day. Some episodes are just right and take a few minutes. Dan edits them on his MacG4 using Adobe Premiere, which can take from 30 minutes to many hours. It's a lot of work, but we enjoy it. MM: Is Dan shy? JF: Good question. The answer, actually, is yes. But once you get to know him, he's at least half as outgoing and crazy as I am. But your first impression of him is more subdued. MM: Have we ever seen Dan, besides the shaving episode where I don't think we actually saw him? JF: He is CAMERA SHY. No, he has never been seen. He is Charlie of Charlie's Angels. He gives the assignment and I'm his Sabrina. Will we ever see him on an episode? Who knows. I'm happy that he has agreed to speak on occasion. And the shaving episode was very homo-erotic for two straight guys, didn't you think? MM: How come he conceived of this idea but made you the star? JF: Dan is a very good director and is becoming an excellent editor. He's also a very good writer (we've written scripts together). He is not much into improv and is not an interviewer. My few skills include being good at asking questions and being interesting or funny without a script. I'm a good comedy writer as well, which leaves me being either a journalist, TV writer, or the best damn host of a web show on the Internet.
MM: What's Dan look like? JF: He's cute. He is 5' 8", and was a wrestler in high school, which means he has a neck the size of my thighs. He once said, "I'd feel sorry for someone who tried to strangle me. I wouldn't even wake up." He has black hair, dark eyes and a smile to die for. MM: Would we love Dan as much as we love you? JF:
Almost, but it's not his mission in life to make everyone love him.
It's mine. MM: Are lots of people tuning in to our darling jath.com? JF: Our biggest day was 30,000, and we regularly receive several thousand hits from about 12 countries. And guess what, you guys! Jeff and Dan are gonna film the MASH gals! How cool are we? We will so let you know when we're gonna air. But until then, we swear you'll enjoy all the other shows.
