Dear Darling MASH readers,

And you are MASH readers! That's the wacky thing! People are reading this rag; people in Tonga and Morocco are reading this rag for pete's sake!

Well we'll be dipped in shit; it's been one full year since our first issue. Good golly! How can two little girls, who in all honesty don't know a thing about life and the universe, actually publish a magazine 12 times in one year? Well, we'll tell you how: with the help of fabulous contributors, friends and followers who've helped make the thing worth reading, riddled us with praise and moral support, and who actually read MASH every month, that's how!

MASH was born out of a hunger for new things. Early in the summer of 1999, Kate said to Joanna, "I want to start a magazine. I want it to be of interest to me and people like me, because none of the crap out there is doing the trick." Joanna foolishly replied, "Gee, if I can be of any help..."

What was our goal? Have we reached it? Yeah, we have, but it's the kind of goal you only ever keep reaching for. MASH is what we aspire to. The age-old question: What do you wanna be when you grow up? The answer? ALL OF IT! We (meaning you, too) are smart and hungry. We want a little bit of everything: Art, Literature, Entertainment, Sex, Music and Toys. Fill up our heads world, we can take it. And MASH magazine is meant to help feed that hunger. It's chunks of what interests us (and you, we hope we hope we hope).

Let's say it again, 'cause it sort of sums it up. MASH is what we aspire to: to be, to have, to give, all that good crap.

So into the next year, our friends! We'll try to keep figuring out how to make this thing better each month. And you keep telling us what to do, what you like, what you hate.

Fuck the impossible dream, man - ain't no such thing. We can do anything.
